Drifting, Remixed

I struggled a great deal, but the fruits of my labor have ripened, I hope. This final edit of the material I gathered on my sound and video walks is an accumulation of ideas that slightly staggered away from my production strategy. I feel this video is no longer "about" natural light captured by nature and wildlife, although those images are present. I began this work creating a soundscape that I felt, in a way, remixed my experience of drifting. I knew that if I focused on this primarily I would be able to accompany it with video.

Well, here it is, the fruit. Take a bite.

The Rising River

This is my first "sound sketch" if you will. I wanted to experiment with a match of cuts between sound and video. For this particular video I found samples of the river's sound and arranged them in increasing order of volume and intensity. I feel like if it were a longer clip I would be able to implement a rhythm and emotion to the sound of the water. We'll see where I take it in my final version of the collections of my drift.

Trickles and Ripples

This is a second sketch of my collected video with sound added. At first I was not thrilled with the sound of trickling water accompanied by light but I think the combination of the two most vital sources of life has grown on me. These shots and sounds were all collected on my walk along the Milwaukee River. The video seen is a direct effect of my production strategy, viewing light through nature.

Spinning Circles

This is my second sample of collected material on my drift. Much of this was taken later at night on campus, I did not actually take most of these pictures on any of my drift walks, but I felt I should experiment more with motion since I am still exploring for software to edit my video. These photographs mostly engage my production strategy, viewing light through nature.

The Tunnel

I have ventured out into the world and experienced its wonders! I also ventured back to my abode and have experienced its wrath. It seems my video editing software is incapable of reading the video captured by my camera so I used the great deal of pictures I took instead and created a sort of stop motion video. Much of this material was taken along the Milwaukee River where I ventured to observe light cast through nature as my production strategy suggests.

Production Strategy : The Strategy for Production

Within the next month or so I will be exploring the world once more, as I did in my first Drift. This Drift will be different as I will be collecting video samples from my walks as well as audio. In order to aid my search for visual aid I have created a "Production Strategy". I will search for examples of light being cast through nature. For example, a lamp post light shining through leaves, a spot light shining through bushes, the light of the sun reflected off a lake. Both lights artificial and natural will be sufficient. I hope this will allow me to search for visual material that is interesting and can aid the sounds I collect as well.

Here are the two maps of my walks. They were both very different but alike in the spirit that I was close to nature in large urban landscapes. Be sure to view both the Milwaukee walk and the Green Bay walk both in this map.
